Santaolalla worked on the game for around two to three years. He was tasked by the team at developer Naughty Dog with creating the emotional, character-based tracks. The covers became a significant part of the characters and their development Ellie's guitar allows her to access memories and emotions, and Pearl Jam's song " Future Days" acts as a theme between her and Joel throughout the game.
